Food trend in China
It is difficult to say why, but the COVID-19 pandemic could be a good starting point. 3/4 of consumers have changed their food shopping or consumption habits in the last 12 months due to a food safety scare. This is what emerges from the research that Lloyd’s Register has just conducted. The public demands higher standards. Online shopping and takeout services have increased. Many in the retail and hospitality industries have increased online delivery services, launching contactless distribution and, in some cases, using vending machines operated through artificial intelligence and digital technologies. The full extent to which this has impacted consumption habits is still being analysed, but it is something that the food supply chain must learn from. When Lloyd’s Register conducted a similar research in the UK and USA before the global pandemic, it found that 56% of Americans and just 31% of Brits were more concerned. Now, unsurprisingly, consumers place food hygiene (82%) as their number one food priority, followed closely by nutrition (73%). Interestingly, waste (15%) and price (21%) are seen as much lower priorities in comparison. Supermarkets also appear to be under more scrutiny from the public. Indeed, 90% of adults from China would expect to know the precise ingredients of all food products sold.
